Information and
support for schools
The Pupil Referral Units and Behaviour
Support Team in South Gloucestershire are part of
EOTAS
(Education Other Than At School). The Behaviour Support Team
is based at Severnside Education Centre. Secondary schools
can access support from this team through their allocated BST
worker. Primary schools can access BST by emailing
admin@7side.org.uk or
calling Severnside.

PRU referral and information
Schools
are encouraged to use the
CAF
process to assess a pupil and, particularly where a CAF is
already in place, forward the CAF form as the referral. Please see the guidance in our newly
updated
PRU Admissions Policy - currently in draft Dec 09.
Requests for service forms
are also accepted. When submitting a
referral please follow the guidance in the
PRU Admissions Policy in order that the process is not
delayed.
When referring
excluded pupils please
remember that admissions operate on a very tight time
schedule. It will help us to meet the statutory deadlines if
the
Procedures table for admitting excluded students to the PRU
is consulted.
PRU Reintegration policy -
unavailable, currently under review
- Support for pupils with behaviour difficulties
All
South Gloucestershire primary and secondary pupils who are
permanently excluded from school are supported by the PRU.
Education for fixed period excluded pupils under the
Secondary School 6 day + partnership agreement (for pupils
who are fixed period excluded from school from their 10th
day of exclusion onwards) is also provided. Further support
is available for children and young people who are at risk
of exclusion from school on the basis that a thorough
multi-agency assessment (preferably a CAF) can be evidenced
and appropriate proposals for support are made. Behaviour
interventions are offered by the Primary Pathways Unit, the
Severnside Reintegration Unit, (short stay reintegration
unit) and the Severnside KS4 Centre.
Supported transfer pupils
(as an outcome of a Stage 3 meeting of the
Partnership Inclusion Programme - PIP will
often remain in the PRU temporarily, pending a PRRP
decision. A PRU, BST or CYP member of staff should attend
the Stage 3 meeting and it is expected that the school will
have evidenced actions at Stages 1&2. Schools should put in
place flexible programmes for pupils in Key Stage 4
(including “Work 2 Learn”) where appropriate. Key Stage 3
pupils at Stage 3 of the PIP will be considered for PRU
placement where there needs to be provision in place prior
to a PRRP meeting for supported transfer or where assessment
indicates an immediate mainstream placement is likely to
fail.

- Support for pupils
who are unable to attend school because of medical needs.
The PRU
supports the education of children with medical conditions
which cause significant absence from school. The aim is to
maintain continuity of education and to facilitate the
individual learning of each young person by a personalised
approach. The Service ensures children are out of school for
the shortest possible time, having taken into consideration
their medical, emotional and educational needs. The work of
the Service encompasses close liaison with schools, medical
personnel, parent/carers and young people to ensure
educational needs are being met and that reintegration into
full-time education is supported effectively. Pupils are dual
registered when absent from school. Schools will be required
to work closely with the service in programme design and
delivery, reintegration and the monitoring of attendance.

- Support for pupils with BESD statements
This provision is
commissioned by South Gloucestershire Special Educational
Needs Department. Referrals are made by the SEN Case
Advisory Panel, (CAP) often whilst a BESD Day School is
being sought or as the temporary placement which best meets
a pupil's current need. The CAP seeks a place as it would
for a Special School by referring to the PRU. The Access
Centre provides for KS3 BESD pupils. A small number of KS4
BESD pupils are funded to attend the Severnside Centre.
